Do you need a retainer? Have you lost your retainer? No Worries. Stoute Dental can make any type of retainer you need whether your braces were done by us or not.
A retainer is a custom-made orthodontic appliances designed to “retain” or hold the position of your teeth. Once your braces come off, your teeth need to settle into the jawbone and soft tissue that hold them in place. Made of wire and plastic or solid plastic, your custom-made retainer will keep your teeth from shifting and protect your investment in orthodontics!
As you age, your teeth tend to shift. Your retainer will also help control this naturally occurring, age-related shifting. Wearing your retainer exactly as instructed is the best insurance that your orthodontic treatment results last a lifetime.
There are three types of retainers you are likely to come across. Which one you end up using depends on your treatment plan and needs.
Hawley Retainer.

This retainer is made up of acrylic molded to the shape of your mouth and a wire to hold the teeth in place. It is removable, making it easy to clean, and the acrylic is available in a wide range of colors.
Essix or Clear Plastic Retainer.

This retainer looks much like the Invisalign trays. They are made of plastic and clear, making them virtually invisible to anyone except you. They are easy to remove and clean, but less durable than a Hawley retainer. They are not recommended for individuals who grind their teeth.
Fixed Bonded Retainer.

This type of retainer is usually placed on the back of upper and lower front teeth. It is not removable and is usually left in place for months. This solution is common for those who have a high risk of their teeth moving back into their old positions.
